Radio Le Mans - windows media player webcast. Right now they're broadcasting qualifying lap times. They'll have live coverage of the race tomorrow. If the link doesn't work, copy the link into WMP and select "open url", past the link there, and hit enter.

I thought this was interesting. Laps for charity, essentially. $25 for three laps at your local raceway. Pretty expensive $/lap ratio, but it's a good way to get your feet wet, and help out a good cause.

SCARE [17 Feb 2004|06:19pm]

Santa Cruz Area Race Enthusiasts
The last Tuesday of the month
7PM - whenever.
Next meeting at Charlie O's, Feb 24, 2004

Years ago I used to instigate a monthly "beer and benchracing" social
get together in the Santa Cruz mountains. I called it SCARE, Santa
Cruz Area Race Enthusiasts. The tagline was "No dues, No don'ts just
beer and benchracing". I've decided to try to start it up again as
there are a lot of racers and motorheads in the Santa Cruz area.

I haven't worked out all of the details yet, but my inclination would
be to have it in Scotts Valley on the last Tuesday of the
month. Meet at 7PM which should be late enough for the folks
who work "over the hill" and still early enough for dinner. I haven't
picked a place yet, I'm open for, actually soliciting,
suggestions. I'm leaning towards someplace in Scotts Valley. I'd like
decent food, not too pricey, preferably with decent beer available,
and quiet enough that people can talk.

I've decided to hold the first one at Charlie O's. It is in the King's
Village shopping center, behind Nob Hill and the movie theater on
Mt. Hermon Road. They've got decent food, a bar, and a pool hall
upstairs.

For the purposes of this group, "Santa Cruz Area" is anyone close
enough to to join us, whether you're riding from Felton or
Fresno. Race Enthusiast is defined as anyone who would want to meet a
bunch of racers for dinner, beer and/or socializing. I don't care if
your preference is two wheels, four wheels, hulls or wings, asphalt,
dirt, water or air.

I'll try to keep http://red4est.red4est.com/scare/ up to date with the
details.

In other racing related news, I'm racing again. I'm sharing my Spec
Miata http://www.red4est.com/miata with a couple of friends. Under the
banner of "Team Otter". At the first NASA race weekend of the year, I
took home third place (out of five or six cars) both days. Primarily
by virtue of not crashing or breaking the car. Between SCCA and NASA
we are looking at two or three race weekends every month, and we can
use a lot of help with the car, either in the shop or at the track.

Right now I'm taking a class called American Sports history. In order to get a feel for the class our teacher had us fill out a survey asking about what TV or media stuff we watched/read about sports, who our sports heros are and what sports we think we are most proficient at. Of course, I wrote down auto racing. Today, the prof read off the results of the survey. After he read "1; auto racing" you just here 3 people in the back corner say "Who the bleepedybleep races cars?"

I just sat back and smiled.

Hey! I've joined this digital contest called ScionSpy. I'm trying to build the longest photo gallery of SCION pictures. By helping me out, we could ALL win great prizes.

E-Mail me for pictures, I have plenty!!! (MichaelQuin928@aol.com)

*********************************************************************************
What's are SCIONS?!? They are the xA, xB and the soon to be released tC, three very cool cars. If you can find one on the road, take a picture of it using your camera phone or digital camera. Or, you can use any digital photo of a SCION as long as it's different from those already in my gallery. Upload from your browser at www.scionspy.com You'll need to get it into my gallery folder using the following Gallery Code: oasis. If you want to upload from your camera phone, email it to pics@scionspy.com or use the following link: http://www.scionspy.com/chain_add.php?passcode=spyme. Just make sure you still register online to be eligible for prizes.
**********************************************************************************

You can only participate once per gallery and don't send in any rude photos that will get us all kicked out of the contest. Just SCIONs please.

The gallery code is: spyme

That's it. Let's go!

Automatic Tranny [29 Jan 2004|04:00pm]

Has anyone been away from driving a manual transmission for so long that they've lost their edge when they return to track driving? I'm asking because if I do end up getting rid of my car I'd be driving an auto and I don't know how long that would be. I'm just curious if you could get back to it like riding a bike or will it be something that you'll have to relearn almost. I'm not talking about normally driving MT either. I'm talking about in a race situation, just to clear that up.

Anyone in here into dirt track racing. Such as Sprints, Micros, or Midgets. My whole family is into Openwheel racing. My brother has raced Karts, Micros, and now he is gonna race Ford Focus Midgets. My other brother will races Micros. As far as Sprints, My uncles raced them for awhile and I had a cousin that sat a fast time record at Knoxville. So I was just wondering if anyone else was interested in this kind of racing!

rookie driver on the track.... [21 Oct 2003|02:54pm]

hey guys, just found this community i figured it'd be perfect for me since i race 125cc shifter karts. i've been doing it on and off recently because of school and lots of stuff like that. i used to race karts a lot when i was younger. recently i've been working on getting my SCCA license. as soon as i'll have time i plan to go to the Panoz School or Bondurant. i don't know how useful it will be for me (even though if you have an SCCA license in Europe and you buy an M3 CSL they'll remove the speed limiter for you at no charge) since i'll be joining the Navy in a year or two. i absolutely love f1 racing, and am a big, very big, JPM fan, along with bmw williams. i'm big on motogp too, i have a yamaha r6 that i race when i have the chance too, not competitively, just for fun.

Anyone else with a Spec Miata? [23 Sep 2003|12:51am]

lrc
I'm fairly new to Live Journal. After about 8 years of mostly just teaching rather than racing, I'm finally building another racecar. My MGB-GT is just too expensive to crash, and besides it's not competitive in any class.

I'm building a Miata up as a spec miata. I'm starting out with it as a street car, legal and everything, just so I can get as much debugged as possible before dragging it to the track. I just got it on the road last weekend. With luck, I'll install the suspension next weekend. If there are any other racers near Santa Cruz California, I'd love some help.

My background: I first drove on the track at Bondurant, at Sears Point, in November of '86. In March of '88 I got my SCCA license and raced, mostly in IT, until I ran out of money in '95. I've been teaching, mostly with NASA since about 1989. One of my current projects is the textbook for NASA, which I originally wrote in about '93, and am working on the new revision.

I also moderate the raceteachers group on yahoogroups. A discussion forum for people who teach performance driving and riding.

[21 Apr 2003|04:15pm]

Ok guys and girls, I need some help here. I have to buy tires in the very near future and I have it whittled down to two potentials.
First up the Falken Azenis Sport
(larger sidewall than I want [205/50R15], excellent dry traction, poor wet traction, ~$85/tire)
Second the Kumho Ecsta Supra 712
(exactly the size I want[195/45R15], ok wet traction, ok dry traction, ~$115/tire)

[prices are mounted balanced and shipped]

I drive very aggressively on the street and need tires that are going to stay under me. I also plan on hitting a few autocross type events this year.

A little history about me, I have a set of Yokahoma AVS Intermediates now and they were just ok. I never got to autocross with them so I’m not sure what thy would have done there, but on the street they tended to let go under hard acceleration and cornering (quicker than I thought they should)

Thoughts, opinions, experience, etc. anyone?
sorry for cross posting.
